ATR 350 Pathophysiology and Pharmacology for ATR

3 Credits

This course begins with an overview of the pathophysiological concepts of injury, healing, and immunity as they relate to the following systems of the human body: endocrine, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal. In subsequent portions of the course, the student critically studies pharmacology and its relationship to sports and exercise. Emphasis is placed upon integrating pharmacologic concepts into clinical practice. The course also examines various commonly used drugs and supplements that affect exercise performance. Practical guidelines are also offered for the athletic trainer. Pharmacologic agents that are reviewed in this course include, but are not limited to, cardiopulmonary agents, antihypertensive agents, respiratory anti-inflammatory agents, HGH, anabolic steroids, NSAIDs, nutritional supplements, and socially used drugs. Drug testing and prescription guidelines are also studied.

Prerequisite(s): ATR 100 ATR 289 , ATR 389 , and BIO 206 /BIO 216 .
