SPEC 212 Assistive Technology

3 Credits

In this course, the technology that is used to help the instructional, language, and social needs of individuals with disabilities is studied. Students are also taught to identify and use specialized resources to implement instructional strategies that have been specifically designed for individuals with disabilities. Students are further expected to demonstrate the use of appropriate adaptations and technology for all individuals with disabilities; to identify resources and techniques which are used across all transition points to allow for the effective transition of individuals with disabilities; and to create an optimal learning environment by utilizing, evaluating, modifying, and adapting the classroom setting, curricula, teaching strategies, materials, and equipment.

NOTE: All students pursuing Early Elementary (PK–4) and Special Education (PK–8) Certification are required to successfully complete ECE 101, Teaching as a Profession: PK–4, before taking any other required course in the major. Students pursuing Secondary Teacher Certification in either Biology/General Science, English, or Social Studies are required to successfully complete EDU 101, Teaching as a Profession, before taking any other required course in the major. Proof of a current FBI Fingerprint Clearance, a Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance, and a Pennsylvania Criminal Background Clearance is required and must be submitted to the Dean of Education and Human Service’s office in order to begin any ECE, EDU, or SPEC course. No student may begin these classes without all current clearances. EDU 230, Introduction to Exceptionalities, is a prerequisite to all Special Education {SPEC] courses.
