SPEC 322 ASD & Neurodiversity

3 Credits

This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the minds of neurodiverse individuals, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD/ADD, and other neurodiverse disabilities. Topics include common characteristics, executive functioning, theory of mind, and how neurodiverse individuals navigate a neurotypical world, with an emphasis on moving beyond deficit-based perspectives toward strengths-based understanding. Students will apply this knowledge to create, modify, and assess curriculum in alignment with Pennsylvania state standards and the Individuals with Disabilities Education and Improvement Act (IDEIA), developing practical skills for designing accommodations and instructional strategies that support neurodiverse learners in inclusive educational environments.

NOTE: There is a required field component (EDU 125 ) for this course.  All students are required to have valid clearances to participate in field experience.
