Arts Production and Performance
The Arts Production and Performance major is an interdisciplinary program of study which combines a liberal arts education with a focus on the development of the skills that are needed for artistic production in a variety of media. The program develops a well-rounded and versatile student who possesses a strong base of production and/or performance techniques that are grounded in a thorough understanding of aesthetic principles. Graduates of the program are equipped to enter such fields as video and audio production; graphic design; corporate and educational media; theater production and management; and advertising copywriting. Through training in performance, graduates also complete the program with the enhanced self-confidence, self-discipline, creativity, and facility with project management which are prized in any profession.
Program Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, the graduate will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arts Production and Performance and will:
- Articulate the fundamental aesthetic principles underlying the visual and performing arts.
- Explain the complexity of artistic production and the division of labor required for production success.
- Collaborate effectively as a member of a production team in a variety of media.
- Manage aspects of production projects by assuming positions of leadership.
- Create effective images in a variety of media.
- Use a variety of technologies for the creation of images and sound.
- Play a musical instrument and/or sing with competence and confidence.
- Perform on stage and/or manage stage performance with competence and confidence.
- Apply the principles of effective songwriting and scriptwriting.
- Explain the importance of the arts in living a joyful human life and how the arts can be used in the service of others.
- Identify the career options and paths available in production and performance.
Admission Criteria
Candidates for admission to the Arts Production and Performance major are required to:
- Achieve a grade of “C” or higher in all major requirements taken prior to admission to the major.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00.
- Make formal application to the major, preferably in the Fall semester of the sophomore year.
Progression Criteria/Degree Requirements
Progression in the Arts Production and Performance major leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree requires the student to:
- Receive a minimum grade of “C” in every major course requirement.
- Maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA.
- Complete a minimum of 122 credits.
Cooperative Education Requirement
Students are required to complete a minimum of three (3) credits of Cooperative Education in settings related to Arts Production and Performance. See ARTPP 394-396 and ARTPP 494-496 in the Course Descriptions section of this catalog for specific details pertaining to this experience. Major Requirements: 63 Credits

Arts Production and Performance: 9 Credits
Communication and Media Arts: 9 Credits
Choose three additional credits: 3 Credits
Choose three additional credits in the study of voice or in the study of one instrument. Each of these courses is offered for one credit each. Additional information about these courses can be found in the Music [MUS] Course Descriptions section of this catalog. (Note also that some of the credits can be earned through application of individual instrumental study; for example, advanced woodwind students who audition successfully to play that instrument in the orchestra or in the jazz ensemble for credit may use those credits towards the completion of this requirement.) Any Art [ART], Music [MUS], or Theater [THEA] courses, nine credits of which must be at either the 300-level or 400-level. General Electives: 18 Credits
