Early Elementary Education (PK-4) and Special Education (PK-8) Post-Graduate Teacher Certification

Graduate students are assessed through a series of state sanctioned achievement tests.. It is our policy that all graduate students are pass each test required for their
specific area of certification prior to enrolling in EDU 575: Student Teaching.

In addition all students are assessed using the PDE 430 Form. This document has been prepared by PDE and is required of all students seeking initial certification. The form mandates that specific standards be met in order for a student to be recommended by Neumann University to PDE for certification.

Finally, each student prepares a Portfolio that demonstrates how the student has met the competencies established by PDE for initial teacher certification as well as how the student has met the 10 Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Principles.

For those students seeking Teacher Certification in Early Elementary Education and Special Education combined, the following graduate courses are required and are to be successfully completed.

EDU 530 Pedagogy of Cognition: Prenatal to Nine 3 Credits
EDU 531 Language Development and the English Language Learner 3 Credits
EDU 532 Integrating Curriculum and Instruction with the Arts for the Developing Child 3 Credits
EDU 533 Reading Methods Through Differentiated Instruction 3 Credits
EDU 534 Mathematical Foundations: Preschool to Grade Four (inclusive Strategies) 3 Credits
EDU 535 Science and Social Studies Methods (pk-4) 3 Credits
EDU 536 Intensive Reading and Writing in a Least Restrictive Environment 3 Credits
EDU 548 Teaching Strategies Seminar I: Subject Matter Applications 3 Credits
EDU 558 Teaching Strategies Seminar II: Pervasive Developmental Disorders 3 Credits
EDU 560 Graduate Seminar 3 Credits *
EDU 568 Classroom Management: Behavioral Disorders and Social/Emotional Disorders 3 Credits
EDU 575 Practicum in Teaching: Early Childhood/Elementary/Special Education 3 Credits *

Note:

Students who wish to pursue Early Elementary Education (PK-4) and Special Education (PK-8) Teacher Certification are also able to demonstrate course work in their baccalaureate degree specified to be sufficient by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for entry into this master’s degree program.

Students pursuing the Teacher Certification option are also required to obtain proof of a current FBI Fingerprint Clearance, a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and a Pennsylvania Criminal Background Clearance in order to begin student teaching (EDU 575 ). * EDU 560 can only be taken at the main campus of Neumann University. Prior to registering for both EDU 560 and EDU 575 , the student must have taken and passed all required PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II examinations.
