120 Credits Required for Biology, Pre-Medical Studies Option, B.S. Degree

The Bachelor of Science in Biology, Pre-Medical Studies Option provides a solid foundation for graduate study in various medical fields. In this major, students will get rigorous coursework that will prepare them intellectually for the intended career. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical professionals such as doctors, dentists and veterinarians is projected to grow between 4 and 19% from 2021 to 2031 per year depending on the specialty. Students in this major will be introduced to various math and science courses, which will prepare them for advanced degrees in medicine. All students in the Biology Program are required to participate in off-campus research or applied science through the University’s Office of Career and Professional Development.

Mission

In accordance with the Mission Statement of Neumann University and that of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, the purpose of the Biology Program is to provide excellent undergraduate professional education in general biology that is founded on the core values of St. Francis of Assisi. By linking Franciscan values and tradition with a strong liberal arts and professional education, graduates of Neumann University’s Biology Program will have the knowledge and skills that are required for competent professional practice; for lifelong development of that practice; for advanced study in biology, medical lab science (MLS), or education; and for fulfillment of professional and social responsibility.

Admissions Requirements

  • For the Bachelor of Science in Biology option in Pre-Medical Studies incoming first year students must have an overall high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    • Have a cumulative High School science GPA of 3.0 or higher and have completed both Biology and Chemistry in High School.
    • Have completed Algebra II. If Algebra II was not completed, then the student is required to take both MATH103 College Algebra at the same time as CHEM107/117 General Chemistry I w/lab.

*Students admitted to Neumann are only allowed to change their specializations once they have met the criteria of a particular degree within the Biology Program. Depending on which major a student wants to transfer into they will need approval from the Director of the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program or the Associate Dean of Sciences.

Progression Criteria/Degree Requirements:

  • Demonstrate satisfactory academic progress in the major with a cumulative science GPA of 3.40 or higher and have no grade less than a “B-” (2.7) for all other required MCAT courses (BIO 107/117, BIO 108/118, CHEM 107/117, CHEM 108/118, CHEM 211/221, CHEM 212/222, CHEM 312/322, SOC 101, PSYCH 101, PHY I and II, MATH 250).
  • All required MCAT courses listed above should be completed at Neumann University.
  • All other required math and science courses not mentioned above must be passed with a grade of a “C+” or higher.
  • Students who are interested in medical careers meet with the Pre-Medical and Pre- Professional Advisor(s) during their freshman and sophomore years. Formal advising begins the second semester of sophomore year, and only after the student has contacted and is interviewed by the members of the Pre-Medical and Pre-Professional Advisory Committee of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
  • Courses may be repeated only one time, whether the repetition is a consequence of student withdrawal from a course, institutional withdrawal from a course, or those who fail to earn a passing grade lecture or lab (as described above).
  • If a course is repeated more than one time, please refer to the “Repeated Courses” policy in the Academic Regulations and Standards section of this catalog for additional information.
  • Internship Requirement - Students within the Biology program are required to obtain an internship at an off-campus setting through the Center for Career and Professional Development at Neumann.

Students that do not meet the requirements outlined above may still qualify for other degrees within the Biology Program and will have to meet with the Associate Dean of Sciences to discuss options within the program. A student may apply for an exception to policy and must contact the Associate Dean before the start of the next semester.

Complete a minimum of 120 credits for the B.S. in Biology, Pre-Medical Studies Option.
