Mathematics


The Bachelor of Science degree program in Mathematics prepares students for cutting-edge careers in business, banking, engineering, government, computing/information technology, secondary education, and higher education. Small class sizes enhance the math major at Neumann University. In this major, students can choose from one of the following three paths of study, each of which is designed as preparation for exciting career options.

The B.S. in mathematics is composed of two tracks. Both tracks require a computer programming course and a unique three-credit course in the use of mathematical software.

General Mathematics Track. This track provides for careers in business, banking, government, computing/information technology, and education, as well as opportunities for graduate study.

Pre-Engineering Track. The Pre-engineering track is an abbreviated 2.5-year program for students who wish to pursue an engineering degree at Drexel University. This challenging track requires more science classes than the other tracks as well as two summer classes.

​Secondary Education Certification in Mathematics. Students are prepared for a rewarding career teaching mathematics at the secondary education level. Students are provided with an interdisciplinary experience that combines mathematics with selected education courses, including a secondary education student teaching practicum.

Mission

The mission of the Math program is to prepare students for a variety of career opportunities in business, research, industry, and education.

Program Outcomes

  • Perform complex calculations through the appropriate use of algorithm or strategy.
  • Apply the appropriate skills and theorems to solve pure and applied mathematics problems.
  • Interpret formal mathematical writing and proofs of common theorems.
  • Develop patterns, conjectures, and inferences based on data and/or theoretical results.
  • Justify conclusions through inductive and deductive methods.

Admission Criteria

Owing to the difficulty of the engineering program, to be accepted in the pre-engineering track of the math major, students must have a minimum 550 math SAT and a minimum high school G.P.A. of 3.0. Students pursuing a Secondary Education certificate or pursuing the pure math track must have either a 550 math SAT or at least a B in Calc I or at least a 3 on an AP Calculus exam. Applicants to the Secondary Education program must also have a 3.0 college GPA and have met the Pennsylvania Department of Education basic skills requirement at the time of admission to the certificate program through the Division of Education and Human Services. The basic skills requirement can be met through a minimum 500 SAT Verbal and Writing score; a minimum score of 22 on the ACT English/Writing; qualifying scores in Reading and Writing on either of the two basic skills tests, the Pearson PAPA or the ETS Core; or any combination of those assessments of the student’s reading and writing ability. Incoming students with AP Calculus scores of 2 or higher will be placed as follows: Those with a 2 will be placed into MATH 250 , while those with a 3 or higher would receive credit for MATH 250  . All other students pursuing the general math track or Secondary Education certification will be placed into MATH 110  or MATH 250  via an Accuplacer test.

Progression Criteria

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00; a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required for the Secondary Education Certification and Pre-Engineering programs.
  • Receive a grade of “C” or higher in every major course requirement and a minimum grade of “B” in every required Education course, if seeking Secondary Education Certification.
  • Receive approval from the Dean of the Division of Education and Human Services for the educational component of the Secondary Education Certification program.
  • In order to remain in the major, a student must not earn a grade less than C in any major course more than two times. For example, a student earns less than C in two major courses. The student retakes each course and earns a C or above. If the same student earns less than C in a third major course, she/he may be counseled out of the major.

Internships

Students in the general math track are required to pursue an internship experience in an off-campus setting through the Internship Program at Neumann. Student teaching fulfills the internship requirement for students seeking Secondary Education certification. Co-ops completed at Drexel University fulfill the internship requirement for students in the Pre-Engineering track.
